The company is named after the Great Smokey Mountains, or “Smokies,” a subrange of the Appalachian Mountains, located along the Tennessee-North Carolina border. The Smokies is the home of the Great Smokey Mountains National Park, the most-visited national park in the United States.
The compound and the experience
The place combines a museum and a retail store. It is definitely more than just a knife shop, and a visit will surely provide enjoyment for the whole family. Inside you will see multiple floors with literally millions of products—not just knives but products ranging from outdoor tools to gardening supplies. Food, of course, is also served.
Inside, you will experience different themes like realistic outdoor scenes. To top it all off, an indoor waterfall provides the main center of attraction.
Apart from being a giant retail store, Smokey Mountain Knife Works is also a national knife museum. Everyone is free to browse the different selection of historic knives and artifacts. They also have genuine Indian artifacts, fossils, nostalgic tin signs, a knife cave, and the infamous 30-foot sword. Admission is free to all visitors.
In the store area, the vast selection of products is overwhelming. Cutlery of all kinds, including any style and application can be found here. Anything from kitchen knives to hunting knives, from brands like Boker to Wild Boar are stocked in-house. Kitchen products and supplies have a special section in the basement. Apart from knives, products like tools, weapons, swords, flashlights, and lighters are also sold.
If you happen to go with your children, you can let them play in the children’s area while you browse the rest of the compound. The children’s are is located in the back of the basement, and houses a mechanical bear and raccoon that sing and play instruments. Parents also enjoy this area because it provides a quick getaway from shopping.
To complete the experience, replenish yourselves in their in-house food court after a tiring day of browsing and shopping. You can enjoy the real outdoors from the benches located in front of the building.
Apart from the main building, a gorgeous little wooden building in the parking lot houses another knife shop. It is where you will find employees making knives in front of your very eyes. It provides a great unique experience and a unique learning opportunity.
